Brief Description

Under The Red Blanket is a memoir of a Swedish-American family living in a remote area of North East India among the Naga headhunting tribes. The book opens with the father of Bea, Bengt Anderson, immigrating to the United States from Sweden on the advice of his aunt Hedda, who worked as a cook for the Roosevelt family at their home in Hyde Park, New York. He later moved to Minnesota where he met and married Edna Michaelson. Soon after, they left the US to spend twenty-nine years living in India. The story relates the trials and tribulations of life in the jungle. It includes stories of life under the British Raj, World War II and the Japanese invasion into India. The book also describes the horrors witnessed during the separation of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Just finished reading ‘Under the Red Blanket' this week. All my childhood memories refreshed!!…It’s a must read for all the Mowgli (Kipling), Ruskin Bond, Jim Corbett and the newest Amish Tripathi(Shiva Trilogy) fans. All your desires of jungle adventures and Naga stories and wisdom have been shared in this novel. This book has a lifetime worth of stories of regular everyday life of people living in the Nagaland area of India. Stories of the great Himalayas , the gorgeous kanchejunga, stories of pre-Independence India that have been lost over time. What I really enjoyed while reading this book was that it's really vivid with detail and imagination…You can almost smell the leaves and trees of nagaland and the junlges …It really made me excited to go back to the jungles I used to hang and explore as a kid, peering into birds nests, stealing little stray dogs’ pups and catching fish in the local pond.. It is definitely a life worth living and sharing. In this day and age, very few peoiple have stories like this worth talking and sharing and I’m so glad Bea Swedien decided to write this book. 5 stars for all the nostalgia i feel right now as I write this!
