Brief Description

Healing know-how for foot pain relief, back support, and postural guidance for walking in high heels - as well as for running, cycling and climbing stairs in any shoe. Comprehensive advice from a New York City Pilates teacher and Backbone and Wingspan movement expert: Herald specializes in helping people improve posture by strengthening the back body muscles and the foot, leg and hip connections which support the spine. The verbal text is structured to precisely align with a vast range of illustrations, photos and video segments to reveal feet from different angles, simplify complex anatomical relationships, and illuminate bodily depths from muscles to connective tissues down to the tendons and bones. Broad and useful advice on calves and hamstrings stretching, plantar fasciitis, and shaping problem areas such as the butt and saddlebags, as well as elongating waistlines. Learning to integrate movement and support from hips-to-heels helps heal metatarsals, hammertoes and weak ankles, assists in alleviating ailments such as sciatica and bursitis, and supports knee and hip joint issues, lumbar spine mobility and sacroiliac stability. Herald also has a background as a musical theater and night club performer - witness in photos and stories how he has more than just “walked in your shoes” -  transforming the healing expertise into a “heightened” experience. Herald is the sobriquet, nom de plume and archetype of the artist formerly known as Tim Driscoll. As the director of Backbone and Wingspan®, his back work has been recognized in W Magazine, Time Out New York, Metro Sports New York and on New York Magazine.com. The High Heel Recovery Clinic he created and hosted within his Midtown-Manhattan Pilates studio was featured on CNN.com Health and WNYC Radio as well as in the Thursday Styles Section of The New York Times and on CBS New York News. • Highly recommended!

This book is very different from, and miles above, the typical foot pain/back pain/posture/exercise book -- it goes beyond the superficial and gets deep into anatomy and physics but in an easy to understand, engaging and though provoking manner. It uses pictures, videos and descriptive imagery in ways that really complement each other. I found this book extremely helpful even as someone who doesn't wear heels often. I spend most of the day sitting at a desk and this book helped me better understand how I can release tension in my body by becoming better connected to my heels.

Anybody who feels that the manifestations of our bodies are direct expressions of our psyche and who we are as beings can find healing in the revelations of Herald's knowledge. This is true! I've never written a review for any book before, but this e-book is seriously impressive! Herald should get an award for this book! At the outset, I was just a little intrigued by it - I thought it might have some new exercises or a few good tips. However, I soon became so fascinated in its wide-range of photos, illustrations and videos as to invest the time in reading it through thoroughly! I do love though how Herald advises in the Introduction to initially just flip through all the pages like a magazine - in order to get an overall sense of the book. I took that advice and flipped through like I would do with the September issue of Vogue! This approach actually helped a lot in becoming undaunted with the sheer size of it - because I was a little overwhelmed at first. But the composition between the photos and the writing - how he organizes the info to specifically pertain to the adjacent images on each and every page - and with how detailed he is in teaching his principles thru this combination of words and pictures - I learned so much in the first bits of the book that I started to read more and more deeply as it went along. And yet it was also simple enough that I could understand how to incorporate it into my posture just by briefly reviewing it. I have to admit I honestly have a desire to go back and read the entire e-book again cover to cover to learn everything its meant to teach! By the way, the metaphors he uses to illustrate his methods are so creative as to make it exciting and really fun to read! Plus, on the iPad, all the photos are gorgeous and the added videos are so cool and also with the additional options of being able to highlight text and/or add my own notes on the side, etc.... all very cool! This book first sparked my interest, but then I didn't want to put it down... and now, that's the sign of successful writing - which gives me a sense of being able to successfully heal myself! Well done, Herald!
  • Anatomical information made easy

The author Herald amazed me with all the images he could evoke in my head as I read this book. Kudos to him for striking the perfect balance in conveying potentially technically difficult information in a very comfortable, understandable manner. As the reader, it feels a bit as if I'm having a conversation with an old friend (albeit one who is a complete expert in his field!). This e-book gives me a different view of my body, and how all the parts integrate. In fact, I think I'll go shoe shopping today... and not buy a single "sensible" pair! - Viveca

'High Heel Healing' is a masterfully woven compilation of anatomy, biography, and art-all rolled into one! Herald has an amazing grasp of form and function as it relates to the lower body and spine, allowing every type of learning style an effortless read (says my ADD and dyslexic self!). The anatomical illustrations are detailed, but the corresponding videos and written analogies give the reader clarity as to why his method works for any lower body ache and pain. Herald clearly explains why I get sciatica and lower back pain and, more importantly, how to avoid it. You'll have so many 'Aha!' moments that it's like having a Google Earth for your posture! I wouldn't be surprised if this book wound up as a staple for yoga, Pilates, and dance instructors. And even my son found it very helpful as a reference for a mid-term exam in his physical therapy class at SFSU. As a bonus, you'll also get a delightful peek into Herald's background as a dancer and actor, all of which lead to his present knowledge and understanding. His true-to-life stories will have you rolling on the floor and laughing one minute, to being misty-eyed the next. Regardless of whether you're a man or woman, if you understand the importance of preserving your posture, there's something in 'High Heel Healing' for you!

The information in this book is true, matter of fact and as former dancer, I wish I had an inkling of it to save my feet while dancing! As a Pilates professional, I am thrilled that people like Herald are out there putting this information for movers and specialists to have access to. The terms "heel to hamstring" have been part of my vocabulary for some time now and because of this book, I don't have to think back to my college professor who demonstrated what that meant. This book is not only for the feet but adds depth to alignment and functional muscle training. High Heel Healing should be in the hands of every practitioner and is going on my list of sources for all of my students, past and present. Job well done! Thank you, Herald!! - Gail, Mind Your Body NYC
  • High heels or not, this is good information

Rarely do I wear high heels, but this ebook has made those infrequent agonies a whole lot easier on my whole body, including those scrunched up toes. The work in this book has more importantly helped me stand taller and walk in any shoe with a sensation of feeling substantially more grounded. I did struggle a bit with the voiceover as I thought it would benefit with a more professional vocal tone. Strongly recommend this ebook to all walks of life.

I love this ebook. Herald lovingly puts years of performance and healing experience together in a way that informs different learning styles. It is truly mind-body. As a Pilates instructor, I love being able to give a client a subtle cue or image and see how it helps them discover how much they can do. Thank you for writing this Herald. Heather Lane

I have been a dancer and yoga teacher for many years, so I know a fair amount about the body and it's inner and outer workings. I was never a huge fan of trying to learn anatomy in my yoga teacher training. I wanted to get to the "good stuff." High Heel Healing IS the best stuff, obviously gleaned from hundreds of sessions with a multitude of body types used in a plethora of ways. This book uses humor and the real life performance and dance experience of the author to make the most intimate details of how all of the parts of the anatomy work together...and how to make them work even better together! I love that anyone, novice or professional, can understand and utilize the subtle workings of the body and how they are connected to the things of the Earth and beyond. The videos that are included are so helpful and essential to see the principles of "heel healing" in motion. A practical and functional work of art by an expert practitioner.

I love to wear high heeled boots but my feet used to kill after standing on them for hours. I started working with Harold years ago and he really taught me how to use my feet correctly and also helped improve my posture. It's so much sexier to stand tall and walk with confidence than hobble and hunch over because of foot pain! This book was very helpful and informative. The pictures throughout the book were great and really added a lot to the explanations. I love the writing style it's not only detailed but fun. Does it help? Well, I'm wearing four inch heels today... so, yes!
